Researchers have issued a warning regarding a dangerous flesh-eating bacteria present in bodies of water throughout a region of New York, posing a potential fatality risk to those infected in as little as 48 hours.
Dr. Christopher Gobler, an ecologist at Stony Brook University’s School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences, revealed that his team has identified “vibrio vulnificus hotspots” in several ponds across Long Island. Individuals affected by the bacteria may confront a 20% chance of succumbing to the infection within a two-day period, he cautioned.
