A shooting incident at a shopping center in Louisiana has resulted in two individuals sustaining critical injuries and several others being wounded. The Baton Rouge Police Department reported that ten people were hurt at the Mall of Louisiana, prompting a swift lockdown by law enforcement. Some of the victims are currently undergoing surgical procedures.
The shooting is believed to have occurred close to the shopping center’s food court around 1:25 pm local time. Emergency services set up a triage area outside a JCPenney store, while the mall entrance and exit were restricted to allow access only to emergency responders.
Chief TJ Morse stated that the public is not at risk presently and clarified that the shooting stemmed from an altercation between two groups that escalated. Mayor-president of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Sid Edwards, confirmed his presence at the mall where a command post was established.
Edwards mentioned, “There has been a shooting with multiple victims. All civilians have been safely evacuated from the mall. Please keep the victims and their families in your thoughts and prayers.” He also added a message to the perpetrators, declaring, “To the individuals responsible, we will apprehend you.”
Local Governor Jeff Landry acknowledged the active shooter situation at the Mall of Louisiana and advised people to avoid the area for safety reasons. He expressed gratitude for the swift response from law enforcement officials and extended thoughts and prayers to those affected.
Attorney General Liz Murrill communicated that she is in contact with District Attorney Hillar Moore, who is closely monitoring the discharge of firearms at the mall’s Food Court. Multiple law enforcement agencies are responding to the incident, urging the public to steer clear of the area until further updates are provided.
