Renowned filmmaker Ken Loach recently highlighted the enduring presence of food banks in society, a decade after the release of his impactful movie “I, Daniel Blake.” The film, which premiered in 2016, stars Dave Johns as the financially struggling Daniel Blake, who faces benefit denial despite medical unfitness for work. The storyline culminates tragically with Daniel’s death due to a heart attack before a benefits appeal hearing, earning the movie prestigious accolades such as the Palme d’Or and a 2017 BAFTA for Outstanding British Film.

A poignant moment from the film features Hayley Squires portraying single mother Katie, who, in a desperate act of hunger, resorts to eating cold baked beans from her hand after visiting a food bank.

In response to the film’s portrayal of Jobcentre staff as unsympathetic, former Tory minister Iain Duncan Smith criticized it as “unfair,” while then Tory business secretary Greg Clark dismissed it as a “work of fiction.”

The proliferation of food banks in the UK became notably apparent, with the first one opening in 2000 and 2,800 established by 2014, coinciding with the coalition government formed by David Cameron and the Liberal Democrats in 2010. In 2024, when Labour assumed power, Keir Starmer vowed to reduce reliance on food banks and food parcels, deeming the situation unacceptable.

Labour’s “New Deal” initiative aims to enhance wages and bolster support systems to render food banks obsolete by 2030. Ken Loach, reflecting on societal changes, expressed disbelief that reliance on food banks has become commonplace, contrasting it with the time before the film’s creation when such a scenario seemed unimaginable.

Emphasizing the film’s critique of a system that blames poverty on the poor, Loach underscored the punitive treatment of vulnerable individuals and the prevalent stigma against those seeking assistance. He highlighted the film’s exploration of a system that unfairly attributes poverty to personal failings rather than systemic issues.
