A British tourist is currently hospitalized in critical condition in Johannesburg, while two crew members onboard the ship require immediate medical care. Hantavirus is typically transmitted through contact with infected rodent waste and can, in rare instances, be transmitted between individuals, leading to severe respiratory complications.
In a statement, Oceanwide confirmed the fatalities and medical situations onboard, emphasizing that no authorization has been granted by Cape Verdean authorities for the treatment or transfer of individuals requiring medical assistance. Local health authorities are yet to make decisions regarding the transfer of the sick individuals to medical facilities in Cape Verde.
Efforts are being made by Dutch authorities to repatriate the affected individuals, including coordinating the return of the deceased passenger and a companion to the Netherlands.
