New airport regulations set to take effect soon will streamline the wait times for millions of travelers. The UK Home Office has announced that starting this summer, families with children aged eight and nine will be permitted to utilize e-gates at UK airports. Previously, children under 10 were not allowed to use these gates, leading to extended queues at passport booths for many families.
Effective July 8, the age limit for accessing E-gates will be lowered, allowing younger children to pass through. These gates utilize facial recognition technology to verify passengers’ identities against their passport photos, a process typically faster than manual checks.
By expanding access to younger children, it is estimated that up to 1.5 million additional children will benefit from the speedy e-gates. This move is part of the UK government’s ongoing efforts to enhance border procedures, including the enforcement of the Electronic Travel Authorization scheme earlier this year.
To be eligible to use the e-gates, children must be at least 120cm tall and accompanied by an adult for biometric scanning. The UK government anticipates that this policy change will benefit an additional 1.5 million children. The adjustment will not only apply to the 13 UK airports with e-gates but also to ports in Brussels and Paris where juxtaposed checks occur.
According to Migration Minister Mike Tapp, this change will offer more families a quicker and smoother travel experience this summer. Phil Douglas, the Border Force director-general, emphasized that increased e-gate access allows officers to focus on identifying potential threats to the UK.
Furthermore, British nationals and citizens from various countries, including those from the European Union, Australia, Canada, and the US, can utilize the UK e-gates. This service is also available to registered traveler service members.
Karen Dee, Chief Executive of AirportsUK, hailed the decision as a positive development, emphasizing that it will expedite border processes and reduce wait times for many families. AirportsUK collaborates closely with border authorities to ensure a secure and welcoming entry point for travelers, aiming to provide a seamless experience for visitors and returning residents.
