Simon Woodroffe, the founder of the renowned Yo! Sushi restaurant chain and an original investor on Dragons’ Den, had a prophetic moment in school when his chemistry teacher predicted he would either become a millionaire or end up in jail. True to that prediction, Woodroffe achieved both milestones in his life journey.

Now aged 74, Woodroffe reflects on his path from a privileged upbringing and education at Marlborough College to his unconventional career trajectory. Despite leaving school with minimal qualifications, he transitioned into being a music roadie and later delved into stage design for iconic figures like Sir Paul McCartney and Ozzy Osbourne, contributing to events like Live Aid.

In a recent interview preceding the launch of his autobiography, Woodroffe acknowledges personal growth from his earlier self-described traits of being loud, obsessed, egotistical, and self-centered. While he has mellowed, his passion for various societal issues remains evident, even if his perspectives are not universally shared.

Regarding the future of the high street, Woodroffe advocates for adaptive transformation, suggesting repurposing shopping malls into alternative spaces like apartments, climbing walls, or drone landing areas. He also expresses skepticism about government intervention, proposing a shift towards governance by tech-savvy individuals rather than traditional politicians.

Despite his wealth, estimated at around £50 million, Woodroffe resides in Thailand and pays no UK taxes, a decision he defends by citing his non-resident status. His entrepreneurial journey took off notably with the inception of Yo! Sushi in 1997, a venture that marked a significant departure in the restaurant industry and eventually led to its lucrative sale.

Woodroffe’s life took a pivotal turn in 1970 when he faced legal consequences for drug dealing, an experience that spurred him to reevaluate his choices and forge a new path. Starting from humble beginnings after his release, he embraced opportunities in stage management and design, collaborating with music legends and eventually venturing into business with Yo! Sushi.

While Woodroffe’s ventures, including the successful Yotel hotel chain, have seen varied levels of success, his innovative spirit persists. His unconventional ideas, such as the ambitious concept of transforming the Millennium Dome into an expansive beach-themed venue, underscore his ongoing drive for creativity and reinvention.

With the Yo! brand at the core of his future aspirations, Woodroffe remains optimistic and grateful for his journey, expressing contentment and a sense of fulfillment in his current phase of life. His autobiography, titled “Yo! Man,” scheduled for release on June 4, offers a deeper insight into his remarkable entrepreneurial odyssey.
