A former executive from Marks & Spencer has been appointed to lead a new Government initiative aimed at assisting young individuals in securing employment or education opportunities.

Marc Bolland has been assigned the task of bringing together leaders from various industries to address the significant issue of one million young people not engaged in employment, education, or training (Neet).

In addition to his roles in prominent companies like Morrisons and Heineken, Bolland is the founder of the Movement to Work charity, which has successfully helped more than 200,000 unemployed youths find employment.

In his new position, Bolland will provide advice to Work and Pensions Secretary Pat McFadden on the Government’s response to the findings of the Alan Milburn Review, which revealed the substantial economic impact of over 1 million Neets costing £125 billion.

Pat McFadden emphasized the urgency of addressing the challenge posed by the high number of young people not in education, employment, or training. He highlighted the importance of understanding the root causes and implementing effective solutions.

Bolland’s appointment underscores the Government’s commitment to addressing youth unemployment. His extensive business experience and involvement with Movement to Work make him well-equipped to collaborate with employers and create opportunities for disadvantaged young people.

Expressing his dedication to the cause, Bolland stated that he believes in the Government’s commitment to tackling the issue of youth unemployment and is eager to work alongside businesses to empower young individuals for success.

The report by Milburn also revealed that a majority of Neets have never held a job, indicating a concerning trend compared to two decades ago.

Furthermore, the report identified that eight out of the top 10 English local authorities with the highest Neet likelihood are located in the North of England and Midlands, including areas like Knowsley, Middlesborough, and Manchester, as well as Islington in London.
