Keir Starmer commended Volodymyr Zelensky for his efforts to bring an end to the violent conflict with Russia while strongly criticizing Vladimir Putin’s ongoing missile and drone attacks on civilian areas. The UK Prime Minister, along with French President Emmanuel Macron and German leader Friedrich Merz, held discussions with the Ukrainian President at 10 Downing Street. Together, they outlined a five-step plan for peace following Zelensky’s declaration that Ukraine will not succumb silently to the attacks.

While the leaders were strategizing for peace, Russian forces under Putin’s command intensified their assaults on Ukraine as diplomatic efforts to halt the conflict hit a roadblock. Putin dismissed Zelensky’s proposal for direct talks, claiming there was no purpose in such a meeting. The situation escalated when a Russian drone strike targeted a storage facility for spent nuclear fuel near the Chernobyl nuclear plant, prompting Zelensky to denounce it as a heinous act of aggression.

In a unified statement, the UK, France, and Germany emphasized the importance of an immediate ceasefire and the initiation of negotiations without altering international borders by force. They stressed Ukraine’s right to choose its security arrangements and alliances while demanding robust security guarantees, including the deployment of a multinational force. The leaders also insisted on holding Russia accountable for damages caused by its military actions until Putin halts the conflict.

Moreover, the joint statement highlighted the necessity of safeguarding European security interests in any potential agreement. The leaders praised Ukrainian advancements on the battlefield and condemned Russia’s indiscriminate missile and drone attacks on Ukrainian cities, expressing condolences for the civilian casualties. They endorsed Zelensky’s call for a diplomatic resolution to the war and supported the proposal for direct dialogue between Ukraine and Russia with the involvement of the US and Europe to facilitate a ceasefire and further negotiations.

The European nations, including the UK and France, reiterated their unwavering support for Ukraine by offering security guarantees in the event of a peace agreement. The International Atomic Energy Agency’s Rafael Grossi raised concerns over the drone attack near Chernobyl, emphasizing the need for concrete actions to deter further Russian aggression. Zelensky, appreciative of his allies’ solidarity, stressed Ukraine’s resolve to defend itself against Russian attacks.

As the diplomatic efforts unfolded, a Ukrainian drone strike targeted St. Petersburg, highlighting Kyiv’s expanding military capabilities. Zelensky affirmed Ukraine’s determination to resist and grow stronger each day. Flags of the UK, France, Germany, and Ukraine adorned Downing Street in preparation for the crucial meeting.

Meanwhile, in separate incidents, a Russian drone strike resulted in casualties at a bus stop in southeastern Ukraine, while a retaliatory Ukrainian attack caused casualties in Russia’s Kursk region. The escalating tensions underscored the urgent need for a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
