Newly released maps illustrate the extensive wildfires continuing to burn in the southwest region of France as nearly 4,000 additional individuals have been evacuated from tourist areas.

The Gironde region has witnessed over 260,000 evacuations following the ignition of the primary fire last week near Saumos village, approximately 25 miles west of Bordeaux.

Recent evacuation directives encompass various recreational establishments and sites surrounding Lacanau resort, as confirmed by Gironde regional authorities.

The fires have devastated the Cap Ferret peninsula and consumed 42,000 hectares, an expanse four times larger than Paris, with containment efforts progressing overnight.

Authorities reported on Tuesday morning that the primary fire has stabilized, and the burnt area remains constant, though there is a looming risk of uncontrollable flare-ups as temperatures soar and humidity diminishes.

Météo-France, the national weather service, anticipates the onset of France’s latest heatwave commencing on Tuesday. Anticipated temperatures range from 32C to 35C across most areas, peaking at 37C in the southwest. Nantes and Paris are projected to reach 33C, Lyon 34C, and Toulouse 35C.

Wednesday is expected to witness further temperature escalation, with intense heat enveloping much of western France. Southern regions could experience scorching highs of 40C, while Paris is slated for 38C and Lyon 36C.

Gironde has been placed under a yellow heat advisory by the weather service effective from midday Tuesday.

French President Emmanuel Macron labeled the ongoing fire situation as unprecedented, deeming it France’s most severe fire-related crisis since World War II.

According to the interior ministry, over 448 square miles have been engulfed by flames in France this year.

Europe stands as the fastest-warming continent globally, heating at a rate more than double the average, as per the European Union’s Copernicus climate service.
