British holidaymakers are advised against canceling their trips abroad until receiving guidance from their travel provider following warnings from officials in a fire-affected area urging tourists to avoid the region. Over 330,000 individuals have been displaced from their residences and lodgings as wildfires rage in southwest France and northern Spain, with temperatures expected to surpass 35C once more this week.

Sophie Brocas, the prefect of Gironde in France, where most evacuations have occurred, cautioned against visiting the area until the situation is stabilized. The Foreign Office has not issued a ‘do not travel’ alert for the impacted areas but recommends that British travelers verify with their accommodation or package holiday provider in advance.

Experts highlight that without an official travel warning in place, individuals canceling their trips might forfeit their right to a refund and risk losing their holiday insurance coverage. ABTA, the industry association representing UK travel agents, emphasized that if a package holiday to a wildfire-affected destination cannot be provided, the tour operator will offer an alternative trip or a full refund, whereas self-canceled trips may incur fees.

For independently booked accommodations, it is crucial to verify availability and refund policies to safeguard potential travel insurance claims. Popular tourist spots in the affected Gironde region of France include Arcachon, Bordeaux, and Fontainebleau forest, while in Spain, Avila, Toledo, Valencia, and Castellon are among the areas under wildfire alerts.

France and Spain are the top overseas destinations for British travelers, with approximately 17.8 million visits to Spain and 9.3 million visits to France in 2024. President Emmanuel Macron described the current fire crisis in France as the worst since World War II, citing unprecedented challenges due to extreme weather phenomena exacerbating firefighting efforts.
