The wife of a US death row convict has formed a friendship with the daughter of one of his victims. Tiana Krasniqi, 31, and McKayla Butler, whose father, Matthew Butler, was one of the men murdered by James Broadnax during a robbery, connected earlier this year.
Krasniqi, a law school graduate, revealed that McKayla, 19, did not support Broadnax’s execution as she believed he was innocent. McKayla had intended to meet Broadnax before his scheduled lethal injection last Thursday.
Broadnax was found guilty of killing music producers Matthew Butler and Stephen Swan in a recording studio parking lot in Garland, Dallas, in 2008. His cousin, Demarius Cummings, who received a life sentence for the same crime, later claimed responsibility for the murders.
Despite prosecutors asserting Broadnax’s guilt based on his confession, he later recanted, attributing the confession to being under the influence of the drug PCP during questioning.
Tiana, residing in Lewisham, South East London, shared that McKayla had reached out to her earlier this year, and they had emotional conversations, both expressing their feelings and deciding to keep in touch.
Broadnax’s legal team argued that his constitutional rights were violated during the trial, citing racial bias in jury selection and the use of his rap lyrics as evidence against him. Despite last-minute appeals, Broadnax was executed in Huntsville, Texas.
Tiana, who witnessed her husband’s execution, continues to struggle with the traumatic event, experiencing flashbacks and panic attacks. She criticized reports stating that Broadnax passed away peacefully, describing the suffering she witnessed during the procedure.
On her TikTok account, Tiana expressed her love for McKayla and her admiration for her strength and resilience, revealing intimate details of their conversations and McKayla’s pursuit of truth amidst conflicting family narratives.
