Parks Canada has achieved a significant milestone in the restoration of a threatened fish species in Banff National Park. The westslope cutthroat trout, once struggling to survive in its traditional habitat, is now making a comeback at Hidden Lake near Lake Louise.

Shelley Humphries, an aquatics specialist at Parks Canada’s Lake Louise, Yoho, and Kootenay field unit, expressed excitement over the self-sustainability of the fish population. The successful reintroduction efforts have led to natural spawning and the repopulation of Hidden Lake by fully grown westslope cutthroat trout.

The restoration project, which began over a decade ago, involved the removal of invasive brook trout using rotenone, a natural fish poison, in 2018 and 2019. Subsequent stocking of eggs in Hidden Lake since 2021 has resulted in a flourishing population of westslope cutthroat trout. Plans are in place to monitor their progress and expansion into streams and creeks beyond Hidden Lake.

Historically, westslope cutthroat trout thrived throughout Banff National Park and southern Alberta until human activities and the introduction of non-native species disrupted their habitat. Parks Canada’s ongoing efforts aim to rectify past mistakes and ensure the survival of this species, which is crucial for the ecosystem.

In addition to Hidden Lake, similar conservation projects are underway at Helen Lake, Cascade Creek, Katherine Lake, and Corral Creek. The agency is also gearing up to protect the threatened bull trout population. Humphries emphasized that conserving endangered species like the westslope cutthroat trout benefits the entire ecosystem, including other wildlife such as birds of prey and bears.

Parks Canada’s commitment to safeguarding endangered species reflects their dedication to preserving biodiversity. The agency’s proactive approach underscores the importance of protecting vulnerable species and ecosystems for future generations.
