Canada, the top-ranked team, is on the verge of securing a spot in the Olympics after a convincing win over Puerto Rico on Friday in the initial match of the women’s volleyball NORCECA Continental Qualifier in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.
In a dominant performance, Canada triumphed over Puerto Rico with a 25-16, 25-22, 25-10 victory, clinching the best-of-five match. The Canadian team showcased superiority in various aspects, leading in attacks (42-32), aces (4-2), and capitalizing on more error points (17-12), while also displaying dominance in blocks with a score of 12-2.
Head coach Giovanni Guidetti commended his team’s mental fortitude, highlighting their focus and unwavering confidence even when Puerto Rico briefly gained the upper hand in the second set. Looking ahead, Guidetti expressed anticipation for the upcoming challenging match on Saturday, stating, “We are precisely where we aimed to be and eagerly anticipate another intense competition.”
Canada is set to face the Dominican Republic on Saturday in a crucial matchup for an Olympic qualification spot. Kiera Van Ryk of Canada emerged as the top scorer of the match, amassing an impressive 20 points through 13 attacks, three blocks, and four aces.
