“Surge in Prairie Mosquito Populations Sparks Bug Spray Shortage”

This summer has seen a surge in mosquito populations across several prairie cities, leading to a shortage of bug spray in stores in Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta. Data from the City of Edmonton revealed a 15-fold increase in mosquito numbers in July compared to the previous year. While not record-breaking, this spike has been notable compared to recent summers, contributing to heightened public concern.

Cities like Saskatoon and Winnipeg also reported elevated mosquito counts this July compared to last year. Experts attribute this increase to the record rainfall experienced in southern Ontario, creating ideal breeding conditions for mosquitoes. Fiona Hunter, a professor at Brock University, highlighted the prevalence of the Ochlerotatus trivittatus species in southern Ontario this year, known for laying eggs in water-filled areas due to the abundant rain.

The persistent biting nature of Ochlerotatus trivittatus has resulted in more frequent encounters with this species, intensifying the perception of a severe mosquito season. Heavy rainfall across southern and southwestern Ontario triggered the hatching of dormant mosquito eggs, further exacerbating the issue.

As temperatures drop, mosquito populations are expected to decline significantly. Mosquito activity diminishes in extreme heat due to dehydration, and cold temperatures lead to their immediate demise. Alberta has already witnessed a decline in mosquito numbers following a cold spell. The fluctuating temperatures may see a resurgence in mosquito activity, but experts anticipate lower populations compared to central Canada’s current mosquito situation.
