The US Secretary of War, Pete Hegseth, has unveiled a unique initiative to ensure optimal testosterone levels among all US army personnel. Hegseth, a former Fox News personality, announced the launch of a screening program to assess and maintain high testosterone levels in service members, particularly those over 30 years old, as testosterone levels typically decrease with age.

In a video presentation, Hegseth emphasized the importance of individual warfighters in maintaining the army’s tactical advantage. He stressed the significance of constantly seeking ways to enhance performance, resilience, and long-term health to uphold this advantage. As part of this effort, he authorized a new screening program for testosterone deficiency, making it a component of the annual health assessment for army personnel over 30.

While the testosterone check is optional for soldiers under 30, those who opt to take the test may receive testosterone replacement therapy if recommended. The goal of the program is to optimize soldiers’ natural capabilities, ensure longevity, and provide the biological foundation necessary for sustained combat readiness.

Hegseth asserted that increasing soldiers’ testosterone levels would enhance the army’s combat effectiveness and keep it at the forefront of lethality. The initiative has prompted comparisons to gender-affirming care in the transgender community, leading to mixed reactions due to Hegseth’s known anti-trans views.

When questioned about the rationale behind the new policy, the Pentagon referred to Hegseth’s remarks on maintaining troops’ strength, resilience, and readiness in modern warfare. The initiative comes in the wake of concerns over substance use, including testosterone, among special operations troops like Navy SEALs, prompting the implementation of drug-testing programs to ensure compliance with regulations.

Hegseth clarified that the initiative aims to optimize soldiers’ natural capabilities rather than promote artificial enhancement. While queries about testing female troops and evaluating estrogen levels were raised, the Pentagon refrained from elaborating beyond Hegseth’s statements.
