A recent United Nations investigation voiced apprehension over alleged mistreatment of a prominent Palestinian doctor captured by the Israeli military in Gaza in December 2024 and still detained in Israel. The UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, has called for the immediate release of Hussam Abu Safiya, who serves as the director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in the Gaza Strip.
Various rights organizations and Abu Safiya’s legal representative have raised concerns about his precarious health situation and prolonged detention without formal charges. Physicians for Human Rights Israel, an Israeli advocacy group, confirmed these claims. The UN inquiry criticized the behavior of Israeli Prison Service guards towards Palestinian detainees, suggesting potential violations of international law that could constitute international crimes, impacting Dr. Abu Safiya’s health directly.
In response, an Israel Prison Service spokesperson dismissed the allegations as baseless and unfounded. Despite not mentioning Abu Safiya by name, the spokesperson refuted claims of mistreatment of him and other medical professionals in prison. Abu Safiya’s lawyer has highlighted ongoing abuses and health risks faced by the doctor, emphasizing his deteriorating physical condition.
The UN inquiry also noted a larger pattern of violations by Israeli authorities towards Abu Safiya, consistent with previous reports. In September 2025, the inquiry accused Israeli authorities of committing genocide by targeting the healthcare system and medical personnel in Gaza since October 2023. Israel has rejected these accusations, citing a political bias against the country and refusing to cooperate with the inquiry.
Separately, a UN rights body labeled Israel’s detention of Abu Safiya as arbitrary and demanded his immediate release, citing violations of human rights declarations and international treaties. In a tragic turn of events, Israeli airstrikes and gunfire claimed the lives of at least nine Palestinians, including two children, in Gaza on Wednesday, with additional individuals sustaining injuries in the attacks.
The Israeli military conducted various strikes in Gaza City, resulting in casualties and heightening tensions in the region. Despite a ceasefire agreement brokered by the U.S. last October, hostilities persist between Israel and Hamas, with both sides accusing each other of violating the truce. The ongoing conflict has led to the loss of numerous lives, predominantly civilian, underscoring the urgent need for a lasting resolution to the violence.
