A tragic incident unfolded as a pregnant woman fell from a 10-story building, uttering “I’m off” moments before the plunge, leaving her baby to miraculously survive the ordeal. Emma Atkinson, a mother of five, was found to have intentionally propelled herself out of the window, although the coroner suggested she may not have intended to end her life. The dramatic event took place at Shakespeare Towers in Leeds on October 22, 2024, where her daughter was born within 30 minutes of the fall.

During an inquest, it was revealed that Emma, aged 38 and over seven months pregnant, had visited her father on the ninth floor of the building. Witness statements indicated that she had been sitting by the window, smoking a cigarette, and then opened the window fully before the tragic incident occurred. Despite her father’s attempts to intervene due to the cold weather, Emma reassured him that she was just seeking fresh air.

Security footage captured her fall at 10:20 am, showing no signs of distress prior to the incident. Emergency responders were able to save the baby through an emergency Caesarean section, while Emma did not survive the impact. Investigations ruled out any foul play in her death, attributing it to a self-inflicted act, without any suspicious circumstances involved.

The coroner highlighted Emma’s previous struggles with mental health and her concerns about legal issues before her demise. Family members attested to her excitement for the upcoming births in the family and her dedication to her children. The inquest concluded with a narrative verdict stating the uncertainty regarding the intent behind Emma’s actions. Despite the deliberate nature of her fall, the coroner acknowledged the absence of recent mental health concerns and ongoing family plans.

In memory of Emma Atkinson, the coroner remarked on her being dearly loved by those around her. For individuals seeking mental health support, contact the Samaritans for assistance.
