Starting this October, millions of households will benefit from a reduction in VAT on their electricity bills. The newly appointed Prime Minister, Andy Burnham, anticipates that this move will increase disposable income and revive hope among the populace. The recent surge in energy bills, influenced by the Middle East conflict, has been a concern, with expectations of sustained high costs during the upcoming winter season.
The government foresees that slashing VAT will lead to an approximate saving of £45 for an average household, based on the current Ofgem price cap, contingent upon individual energy consumption. Notably, the VAT reduction will specifically apply to electricity bills, with substantial savings for heavy electricity consumers.
Despite the VAT cut, energy analysts caution that prevailing pressures on wholesale prices, spurred by Middle East dynamics, could uphold the high Ofgem price cap. Richard Neudegg, director of regulation at Uswitch.com, highlights the potential 5% increase in the next price cap from October, hinting that the VAT adjustment could mitigate the impact of this projected rise.
Furthermore, the Ofgem price cap, which recently increased by about 13%, is set for another update in October, currently standing at £1,663 annually for households on direct debit. The government aims to ensure that the VAT reduction is passed on to all energy customers, including those on fixed tariffs, thereby providing relief across the board.
To fund the VAT cut, the government plans to scrap Sir Keir Starmer’s digital ID initiative, which was estimated to cost around £600 million annually over three years. The move is part of the Prime Minister’s commitment to easing financial burdens on citizens and instilling optimism in the face of economic challenges. Chancellor John Healey lauds the energy tax cut as a vital step in alleviating the cost of living pressures and bolstering households as winter approaches.
