A man with a history of sexual offenses has been sentenced to prison for raping a teenage girl at a house party where his son was present. Richard Murphy, labeled as a threat to young girls by a Dublin High Court judge, assaulted the 16-year-old after encountering her and his son in a neighboring house’s garden. The court learned that Murphy’s son and the girl had engaged in consensual sexual activity before Murphy intervened. Despite the victim’s partial undress and pleas to cover up, Murphy proceeded to orally rape and then rape her, warning her not to disclose the incident. The judge emphasized the victim’s fear during the assault and highlighted Murphy’s concerning behavior, especially considering his previous sexual offenses involving young girls. Murphy, residing in Enniscorthy, Co. Wexford, was already on bail for similar offenses when he committed this crime. Following a trial in Waterford, he was convicted of rape and oral rape, receiving a sentence of 11 years and six months. The court acknowledged the victim’s courage in speaking out and emphasized the severity of Murphy’s actions, noting his lack of remorse and the impact on the young girl’s life.
