The UK is currently experiencing its third heatwave of the year, with temperatures expected to reach as high as 35C. Parents are being cautioned to have conversations with their children about water safety to prevent drownings, following 29 fatalities during the previous two heatwaves. The Mirror has initiated the ‘Save Lives for Sam’ campaign, supported by various organizations including the RNLI and the Royal Life Saving Society UK, in response to the tragic incidents in May and June.

The Met Office has officially declared the Southeast of England to have met the heatwave criteria, anticipating a rise in temperatures across the UK this week. While the heatwave is forecast to be less humid than the previous month, amber heat health alerts have been issued for the Midlands and southern England due to the potential impacts on health services and the elderly population.

Warnings have also been raised about the increase in water-related incidents, including cold water shock and drowning. Authorities stress the importance of water safety measures, especially during hot weather. The Met Office predicts temperatures to peak around 34-35°C later in the week, emphasizing the need for caution and vigilance during this period of heightened heatwave conditions.

The ongoing trend of more frequent and intense heatwaves is attributed to climate change, with the UK experiencing some of its warmest years in recent times. The public is urged to take necessary precautions and stay informed about safety measures to mitigate the risks associated with extreme heat events.
