A confidential investigation conducted by the oversight body of MI5 revealed that the security agency was aware of an abusive operative it supported in a legal case, who exhibited misogynistic tendencies and a disturbing fascination with violence.

This inquiry was initiated following a report by BBC News exposing MI5’s protection of a neo-Nazi informant referred to as agent X. Despite government efforts to impede the investigation, the agency succeeded in preserving agent X’s anonymity.

Initially disclosed that the agent utilized his position to manipulate his partner, even using a machete, before relocating abroad for intelligence work while under scrutiny. In response, the agent’s former partner, known as Beth, demanded an apology from MI5.

Beth, in an interview with the BBC, expressed her desire for a complete apology from MI5 for enabling and overlooking the abuse she endured at the hands of agent X. The oversight body of UK intelligence agencies discovered various indicators of agent X’s violent inclinations, including a video where he threatened his partner.

It was also determined that agent X openly displayed misogyny to his MI5 handlers and engaged in “pick up artistry,” which seeks to exploit women for sexual purposes. MI5 was aware of agent X’s violent preoccupation, as he explicitly informed them.

The inquiry concluded that MI5 demonstrated insufficient professional curiosity towards agent X, leading to severe managerial deficiencies. As a result, MI5 was mandated to rectify these deficiencies by the oversight body.

An internal review at MI5 with the head of the team managing agent X acknowledged that the operative should never have been engaged as an intelligence asset. Reflecting on the case, the MI5 officer admitted the situation as a disaster and acknowledged the error in involving agent X.

A government spokesperson conveyed sympathies to Beth for the abuse she endured, emphasizing the importance of utilizing agents in MI5’s national security efforts. The statement highlighted the stringent legislative and oversight frameworks governing the use of Covert Human Intelligence Sources (CHIS) by MI5.

MI5 settled a human rights claim with Beth by providing compensation, despite not admitting legal culpability. Beth criticized MI5 for gaslighting her and emphasized the agency’s lack of trustworthiness, noting the steps taken by MI5 to compensate her.
