Keir Starmer censured Israel for conducting extensive strikes on Lebanon, expressing concerns about the delicate Iran-US ceasefire being at risk. The British Prime Minister criticized Tel Aviv’s ongoing bombardment, labeling it as inappropriate and asserting that it was challenging to determine if the strikes violated the ceasefire terms.

Shortly after the ceasefire announcement, Israel escalated its attacks on Hezbollah in Lebanon, a group backed by Iran, claiming it fell outside the ceasefire scope. However, Iran accused Israel of breaching the agreement.

During his visit to the Middle East, Mr. Starmer condemned Donald Trump’s aggressive rhetoric towards Tehran, emphasizing that such language contradicts British values and principles. He underscored the importance of halting the attacks and ensuring compliance with the ceasefire terms.

Discussing the usage of UK bases by the US, Mr. Starmer emphasized the necessity for collective self-defense only, reaffirming the UK’s stance on non-participation in offensive actions. He also highlighted the significance of maintaining open passage through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical shipping route affected by recent conflicts.

Following meetings with regional leaders, including Saudi Arabia and the UAE, Mr. Starmer acknowledged the relief over the ceasefire but stressed the need for sustained efforts to secure lasting peace. He emphasized the importance of taking concrete actions to ensure stability in the region.

Regarding the broader implications of the Iran crisis, Mr. Starmer emphasized the need for transformative changes instead of reverting to past norms that have proven ineffective. He urged for stronger responses in various critical areas to address longstanding issues.

Yvette Cooper raised concerns about potential tolls on the Strait of Hormuz, emphasizing the importance of upholding international maritime laws. The Foreign Secretary also cautioned against Israel’s assault on Lebanon, warning of potential destabilization in the region.
