Keir Starmer, along with global leaders, has urged Israel to halt its attacks on Lebanon and advocated for a permanent ceasefire between the US and Iran.
Today, the Prime Minister traveled to Saudi Arabia to engage in discussions with Gulf leaders in pursuit of a lasting solution to the conflict.
This visit follows Donald Trump’s withdrawal from his doomsday threats and acceptance of a two-week ceasefire just before the deadline for Iran to reach an agreement expired.
Despite the ceasefire, Israel has persisted in striking Lebanon in its conflict against Hezbollah, a militant group backed by Iran.
A joint statement from the leaders of the UK, France, Italy, Germany, Canada, Denmark, the Netherlands, Spain, the European Commission, and the European Council welcomed the ceasefire. They emphasized the need for swift progress towards a substantial negotiated settlement to protect Iranian civilians and ensure regional security, thereby averting a potential global energy crisis.
The leaders expressed their support for diplomatic efforts and emphasized the importance of all parties adhering to the ceasefire, including in Lebanon. They also pledged to uphold freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
During his discussions with Gulf leaders, the Prime Minister will explore ways to bolster the temporary halt in hostilities and find a sustainable solution to reopen the vital Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for oil and gas shipments that has seen a surge in global oil prices due to its partial closure.
Additionally, Mr. Starmer is set to meet with British military personnel and express gratitude to armed forces from allied nations stationed in the region.
