“Oil Prices Surge Over $100, Drivers Urged to Stay Calm”

Drivers are being advised to stay calm despite the surge in oil prices exceeding $100 per barrel. Brent crude reached almost $120 on Monday, marking levels not seen since the summer of 2022.

Considering that oil is a key ingredient in producing petrol and diesel, an increase in oil prices directly impacts fuel costs for consumers. Over the weekend, the national average for diesel surpassed 150p per liter, hitting 150.97p on Sunday, as reported by the RAC. Unleaded petrol also rose to an average of 137.51p per liter on the same day.

AA President Edmund King reassured that substantial hikes in fuel prices will not occur suddenly. This delay is due to fuel being purchased at previous rates, causing the effects of rising oil prices to gradually influence pump prices.

In the meantime, drivers are encouraged to compare fuel prices locally to find the most cost-effective options available. King suggested that drivers maintain their refueling routines but consider reducing non-essential trips and adjusting driving habits to conserve fuel, especially with the combination of these measures and warmer weather.

To check the latest petrol and diesel prices near your location, you can utilize the free online tool Petrol Prices by entering your postcode. Additionally, the RAC provides updated national averages for petrol and diesel, including data on supermarkets and motorway stations.

Recently, the government introduced a new “fuel finder” program requiring all UK filling stations to report any petrol or diesel price changes within 30 minutes. This data is publicly accessible, enabling apps, websites, and car navigation systems to display real-time and comparable prices. The Competition and Markets Authority has warned of consequences for retailers failing to comply with the reporting scheme.

To save money on fuel, drivers are advised to avoid costly motorway service stations and plan refueling stops strategically. Regular car maintenance and servicing are also recommended to ensure optimal fuel efficiency and savings.
