President Donald Trump is working on a $400 million ballroom project at the White House to leave his mark on the iconic building. During a recent tour of the construction site, Trump expressed his belief that this ballroom will be one-of-a-kind. The new ballroom, set to replace the smaller original structure, is part of a significant renovation effort Trump is undertaking at the White House.
Trump shared some unconventional details about the project, including plans for a “dead flat” roof made of durable steel that can withstand impacts. He also mentioned that the roof will serve as a drone port to enhance security for Washington, DC. The building will extend six stories underground and will house a military hospital, research facilities, offices for Melania, and a ballroom with a capacity for 1,000 guests. However, the completion of the project is expected in September 2028, just before Trump’s term ends.
While private donors will cover the building costs, Trump has requested $1 billion in taxpayer funding for security expenses. Despite Trump’s assertion that the ballroom will be a gift to the nation, a majority of Americans are reportedly against the project. A recent poll revealed that 56% of US adults oppose the construction.
Trump defended the expenditure by emphasizing the increased security benefits the new ballroom would provide. He pointed out the recent shooting incident at the White House Correspondents Dinner as an example of the need for enhanced security measures. This ballroom initiative is part of Trump’s broader efforts to imprint his legacy on the US capital ahead of the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. Other projects include modifying the reflecting pool and introducing a Paris-inspired monument called the “Arc de Trump.”
