Police officials are expressing their anger over a decision to ease alcohol regulations in the event of England advancing in the World Cup. They have requested the government not to grant a blanket exemption for bars and pubs to extend their operating hours, but their appeals have been rejected. Concerns are rising that the UK may face more disturbances than the actual tournament if this exemption is allowed. Chief Constable Mark Roberts emphasized that they are not aiming to spoil the fun but are worried about potential issues.

According to Roberts, the government is shifting responsibility to police forces to manage any disorder. A proposal suggests that if England progresses to the knockout stages after the group matches, all pubs may be permitted to stay open longer during the games. Roberts, who leads the National Police Chiefs Council for football, highlighted that a broad exemption from licensing laws could lead to more challenges if England advances as hoped.

When asked about the Home Office’s response to their concerns, Roberts stated that they are proceeding with the plan. He acknowledged that while they will manage, it will require adjusting their strategies, potentially leading to officers working late shifts into the early hours and diverting resources from local communities. Roberts expressed a desire for a more controlled approach that benefits the licensed trade without solely relying on the police to handle the situation.

He further noted the potential issues of concentrated establishments causing challenges in residential areas and the associated risks of increased alcohol consumption, disorder, and domestic abuse. Roberts stressed the importance of following normal procedures on a case-by-case basis. The upcoming World Cup will commence next month in the United States, Mexico, and Canada, with England scheduled to play in various cities across these countries.
