President Donald Trump has issued a new warning to NATO by threatening to withdraw troops from additional European nations, following his previous threat to pull out of Germany. In a statement on his Truth Social platform, Trump revealed that the United States is considering reducing its military presence in Germany, with a decision expected soon.

Furthermore, Trump criticized Chancellor Friedrich Merz, urging him to focus on resolving conflicts with Russia and Ukraine and improving his own country instead of involving himself in Iran-related matters. Merz had previously commented on the perceived humiliation of the US in negotiations with Iran.

Responding to questions, Trump indicated the possibility of withdrawing troops from Italy and Spain due to their lack of support in the Iran conflict. He expressed dissatisfaction with Italy’s contribution and criticized Spain for its alleged inadequacy.

Since the start of the Trump administration, there has been speculation about a potential US troop withdrawal from Europe, with the US government emphasizing the need for European nations to take more responsibility for their security and that of Ukraine. Normally, there are around 80,000 to 100,000 US personnel stationed in Europe for various operations and exercises. It has been anticipated for over a year that troops deployed after Russia’s aggression against Ukraine in February 2022 would be the first to be withdrawn.

Germany plays a significant role in hosting several US military facilities, including command headquarters, an airbase, a medical center, and nuclear missile sites. Experts suggest that despite Trump’s threats, the logistical advantages and strategic importance of the US presence in Germany make a complete withdrawal unlikely.

In the past, Trump had announced plans to withdraw a large number of troops from Germany, but logistical challenges and funding issues prevented the implementation of these plans. Any significant redeployment would require substantial financial investments and congressional approval.
