Airlines at the busiest airport globally are adjusting their schedules to minimize disruptions leading up to the summer season. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is directing operators at Chicago O’Hare International Airport to trim their schedules to alleviate operational challenges. Consequently, major carriers like American Airlines and United Airlines are collectively canceling about 2,700 flights scheduled for May.

The FAA announced in April its proactive measures to prevent prolonged delays and cancellations at Chicago O’Hare. Last summer, less than 60% of flights at the airport were punctual, prompting efforts to enhance performance in 2026.

Chicago O’Hare is anticipating nearly 15% more flights on peak days this year compared to the summer of 2025, potentially leading to overscheduling. Airlines have been instructed to reduce flight frequencies to avoid disruptions.

FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford expressed gratitude for airlines cooperating to establish a safe and reliable operational level for the traveling public. Data from aviation analytics company Cirium reveals that United and American Airlines have collectively axed 2,696 roundtrip flights in May, equating to approximately 87 flights per day, affecting some flyers.

American Airlines has reduced its May total by 787 round trips, while United Airlines accounts for the majority of cuts, shelving 1,909 services. United Airlines will operate 41,362 roundtrip flights in May, down from 43,271 initially scheduled.

United Airlines has made significant cuts across 53 routes at O’Hare, with other major U.S. hubs like George Bush Intercontinental Airport, Los Angeles International Airport, and San Francisco International Airport also experiencing reductions in flight frequencies.
