Shocking video footage captured the terrifying moment a tree surgeon believed he was facing death after a severe electric shock from an overhead powerline. Joshua Pocknell, aged 26, sustained life-threatening injuries while working on hedges late at night on April 19, 2024, in Royal Wootton Bassett. The incident occurred when a mobile lighting tower he was moving made contact with the powerline on a busy street.
In the footage, Joshua can be seen struggling to release the tower as he receives the electric shock. He was quickly taken to the hospital and spent the next five weeks undergoing treatment for his injuries. Upton Specialised Tree Services Ltd was fined £60,000 and ordered to pay £6,237 in costs by the Bristol Magistrates’ Court for breaching health and safety regulations.
Reflecting on the incident, Joshua described the intense pain and fear he experienced, recounting how he felt his body lock up and believed he was facing death. He suffered severe burns that required the expertise of multiple surgeons. The aftermath of the incident left him with ongoing pain and discomfort, making it unlikely for him to return to his beloved job.
An investigation by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) revealed that the company had failed to adequately assess and plan for the risks posed by the powerlines when carrying out night work. The lack of proper control measures and training in operating the equipment led to the tragic incident. Upton Specialised Tree Services Ltd admitted to violating the Electricity at Work Regulations.
HSE inspector Tom Preston emphasized the importance of proper safety measures when working near overhead powerlines to avoid such accidents. He stressed that incidents like Joshua’s were preventable with the implementation of suitable risk assessments, safety zones, and adequate training. Failure to prioritize safety in the workplace can have severe consequences, and HSE will take action against those who neglect the necessary precautions.
