Heading to Europe for your summer vacation? Money Saving Expert suggests that every traveler should have a UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) in their possession. This card can provide access to state healthcare in various European countries in case of an emergency, although it is important to note that it is not a substitute for travel insurance.
During the National Money Assembly at St Charles 6th Form College in London, Martin Lewis emphasized the importance of obtaining a GHIC before traveling to Europe. He highlighted that the card is completely free and cautioned against paying any third-party websites for it.
Lewis advised travelers to always carry a GHIC, as it allows for treatment in state-run hospitals in European Union countries at the same cost as locals. This means if locals receive free healthcare, travelers with a GHIC will also receive it without charge.
The GHIC covers essential healthcare services during temporary stays in the EU and select other countries but does not include private medical treatments, mountain rescues, repatriation costs, or expenses related to lost or stolen items.
While advocating for the GHIC, Martin Lewis stressed the necessity of travel insurance. He recommended securing travel insurance as soon as a holiday is booked, stating that it offers protection both before and during the trip. Basic travel insurance for a week-long trip in Europe can be as affordable as £7 to £10 for young travelers.
Lewis recommends following the rule of purchasing travel insurance “ASAB” – as soon as you book, to safeguard against trip cancellations due to unforeseen events like illness or injury.
Applying for a GHIC is a straightforward and free process through the official NHS website, with online applications available for most individuals. It is cautioned against using websites that charge for the service, as the card is obtainable free of charge through the official channel.
