Drivers arriving at Dover port are experiencing delays of up to two hours, while millions of other travelers are facing travel chaos during the bank holiday weekend. Dover authorities have informed tourists of a 120-minute processing time before reaching French border control, citing external congestion on port approach roads. The Port of Dover reassured customers on social media that efforts are being made to expedite border control and check-in processes.

Port of Dover’s CEO, Doug Bannister, warned of increased traffic on Saturday, with an estimated 8,000 cars expected, particularly between 5am and 1pm. Passengers were advised not to arrive more than two hours before their sailing to ensure smooth flow. Additionally, Britons flying to Europe are anticipating delays at border control due to new passport checks.

Meanwhile, a heatwave is forecasted with temperatures exceeding 30C in some regions over the weekend. National Rail cautioned about potential disruptions due to hot weather, which could lead to overhead line expansion, rail buckling, and track-side fire risks, possibly resulting in speed restrictions.

Rail passengers are already experiencing cancellations and disruptions, including issues with overhead power lines and signaling systems. The closure of the East Coast Main Line for maintenance work in North Yorkshire will significantly impact travel, requiring a rail replacement bus service and adding extra travel time.

Industrial action on various railway services is expected, prompting advisories for passengers to travel only if necessary. Routes like the Transpennine and Great Western main line will have rail replacement services, affecting travel plans over the weekend. Additionally, part of the Thameslink line and South Western Railway routes will face disruptions.

With significant rail disruptions, more people are expected to use roads, compounded by the Premier League season finale and the start of the school half-term break. The AA forecasts high traffic volumes, with Friday being the busiest day for travel. Moreover, motorists will encounter higher fuel prices, with petrol costs rising and diesel prices fluctuating.
