A woman tragically lost her life after falling 2,000ft down a volcano while celebrating her 42nd birthday with friends. Ingrid Daniela Vera Figueroa was part of a group attempting to climb one of Chile’s largest and most active volcanoes when the accident happened on May 17, around 3pm.

Prior to the fatal fall, Ingrid shared a birthday message on social media expressing her excitement for the climb up Llaima Volcano. She mentioned feeling a bit uncertain about the adventure ahead. Ingrid, a mother of two and a school governor at Alexander Graham Bell School in Villarrica City, fell to her death while taking photos during the descent.

Reports suggest that Ingrid lost her balance, potentially due to strong winds, and slipped down a steep ravine after releasing her ice pick. Harsh weather conditions, including strong winds, hindered rescue efforts, delaying the recovery of her body until the following morning.

A collaborative effort involving law enforcement, firefighters, volunteers, and officials from the National Forest Corporation (Conaf) successfully retrieved Ingrid’s remains. The Conaf director highlighted that the hiking group failed to register with park authorities or Carabineros as required.

Warning of challenging high-mountain conditions and sub-zero temperatures, officials urged climbers to adhere to safety protocols and register properly before embarking on hikes. Ingrid’s school colleagues praised her as a responsible and dedicated mother, extending condolences to her family and friends.

Volcán Llaima, standing over 3,000 meters tall, presents a tough yet popular destination for experienced hikers in Chile. Authorities are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding Ingrid’s tragic fall.
