A security guard sustained severe injuries in an alleged assault by a train passenger during a ticket inspection. The 26-year-old guard fell from the moving train, traveling at 120km/h (75mph), leading to critical head injuries. The incident occurred when the guard collided with a train door in a physical confrontation with a 36-year-old passenger, as reported by Bild.
The altercation transpired near Ettlingen-Bruchhausen in Germany on a regional train operated by Deutsche Bahn. The train was en route from Offenburg to Karlsruhe when the altercation unfolded on a Friday evening.
The dispute reportedly began when the German passenger was asked for his ticket, escalating into a verbal altercation that prompted the intervention of two security guards. A physical altercation ensued between the allegedly intoxicated passenger and the 26-year-old Bulgarian guard, resulting in the guard being forcibly pushed against a door, causing a section of the steps to break off.
Typically, train operators are alerted when a door opens during transit, triggering an emergency stop. However, this protocol was not followed on the day of the incident.
An investigation into the incident, deemed high priority, has been launched. The 36-year-old suspect was apprehended on the train and charged, though the specific charges remain undisclosed.
Emergency services discovered the injured security guard approximately 1.25 miles from where the train eventually halted. A similar incident occurred in February, where a train conductor lost his life following an assault by a fare evader in Rhineland-Palatinate, also in western Germany.
The 26-year-old assailant received a 10-year prison sentence for manslaughter.
