“Train Driver’s Cause of Death Revealed in Tragic Rail Accident”

The train driver who tragically lost his life in the recent rail accident near Bedford has had the cause of death disclosed. Shaun Burton, aged 60, succumbed to “traumatic injuries to the brainstem and chest, pending further investigation” as per the report from HM Coroner’s Office. The inquest commenced today at Bedfordshire and Luton Coroner’s Court in Ampthill under the direction of coroner Emma Whitting.

During the brief hearing, it was decided to delay proceedings pending additional investigations by the Rail Accident Investigation Branch and British Transport Police. The coroner’s officer, Natalie Shirran, detailed the events leading up to the collision on June 19, 2026, indicating that the accident involved two trains, with one stationary due to a fault, resulting in subsequent trains being halted by red signals.

The collision left a total of 162 individuals injured, with 102 requiring hospital treatment. Initial findings from the Rail Accident Investigation Branch revealed that the train operated by Mr. Burton passed a red signal shortly before the incident. Mr. Burton, hailing from Huntingdon in Cambridgeshire, was operating an East Midlands Railway (EMR) train en route from Corby to London St Pancras when it collided with another EMR service from Nottingham to London St Pancras.

As of the latest update by the RAIB approximately three weeks ago, 53 individuals were still hospitalized, including eight in critical condition. Video footage from a CCTV camera on Mr. Burton’s train showed that a signal near the crash site was displaying a red aspect as the train approached and went past it, according to the RAIB.

Analysis of the train’s data revealed that the brakes were engaged while the train was traveling at 77mph, approximately 200 yards before impact, with the speed reduced to 49mph upon collision. Mr. Burton’s train was equipped with an automatic warning system (AWS) designed to alert the driver to signals on the track.

Investigators reported that the stationary train involved in the collision unexpectedly halted due to a fault in its AWS system, causing the signal to change to red automatically. Approaching trains are required to stop at red signals to prevent accidents. A post-mortem examination conducted confirmed the cause of Mr. Burton’s death as “traumatic injuries to the brainstem and chest, pending further investigations.”

Coroner Emma Whitting extended her condolences to Mr. Burton’s family, friends, and colleagues. The managing director of EMR, Will Rogers, praised Mr. Burton as a dedicated railway professional, highlighting his impact on both colleagues and passengers. Additionally, Dave Calfe, the general secretary of Aslef, paid tribute to Mr. Burton, emphasizing his dedication to his role and the profound loss felt by all who knew him in the railway community.
