A tragic incident resulted in the untimely death of a 12-year-old girl, Brooke Wiggins, who was struck by a falling branch while enjoying a rope swing near her upcoming 13th birthday in Banstead, Surrey. The accident occurred when the branch supporting the swing suddenly broke off, causing it to collapse on her.

During the investigation at the South London Coroner’s Court, it was revealed that the tree maintenance responsibility fell on Surrey County Council, which had faced criticism regarding its tree safety inspection protocols. Despite the scrutiny, Assistant Coroner Ivor Collett determined that the Council had taken reasonable measures within its capacity and could not have done more to prevent the unfortunate incident.
