A distraught young mother, Lydia Pass, 18, was devastated to wake up and find her five-day-old baby, Arabella Mayer, lifeless in her arms. Arabella was born at the Royal Stoke University Hospital on June 12 and brought home to Abbey Hulton, Stoke-on-Trent. Lydia and her partner Ryan put Arabella to bed after feeding her but were awakened by her crying at 3 am. After tending to her needs, they went back to sleep.

Lydia later woke up in a chair at 5:45 am, holding Arabella, who was unresponsive. She had no memory of picking up the baby or falling asleep. An inquest revealed that Lydia may have been suffering from exhaustion due to postpartum complications. Upon discovering Arabella had stopped breathing, Lydia immediately sought help, and paramedics were called to the scene.

Arabella was rushed to Royal Stoke, where medical professionals managed to revive her heart, but she had been clinically dead for approximately 50 minutes. Despite efforts to save her, Arabella’s condition did not improve, and life support was eventually withdrawn on June 20.

The inquest mentioned the possibility that Arabella could have asphyxiated due to an undiagnosed genetic issue or the sleeping position. Detective Inspector Adam Goodyer ruled out negligence, stating that it was a tragic accident. Coroner Lindsey Tonks concluded that Arabella’s death was a result of unsafe sleeping practices.

The coroner highlighted the family’s efforts to provide a loving environment for Arabella and emphasized that there was no evidence of neglect. The tragic situation was deemed a terrible accident, offering condolences to the grieving family.
