A tragic incident occurred at a demolition site where a worker lost his life after an elevator-related accident was reported to emergency services.
The unfortunate event took place at the former Sharp Sakai Plant in Osaka, Japan, early in the morning, prompting a swift response from firefighters and police. Initially thought to be caused by a falling elevator, it was later discovered that the man, aged 62, was fatally crushed by a loose counterweight connected to the lift.
According to Asashi TV, the counterweight that caused the accident weighed around 10 tonnes and is designed to balance the lift car’s weight.
The incident occurred during demolition work at the site, where workers were dismantling the lift system. The victim, a contractor involved in the demolition project and not a Sharp employee, was found lifeless by rescue teams upon arrival.
The former Sharp Sakai Plant, previously used for LCD panel production, is undergoing demolition for future redevelopment purposes.
Fire officials suspect that the accident may have resulted from a broken chain connecting the lift car to the counterweight. However, the exact cause remains under investigation.
Authorities have launched an inquiry into the tragic incident.
