An experienced climber tragically lost her life in a fatal avalanche while descending Mount Makalu in Nepal, following a successful summit of the world’s fifth-highest peak. Shelley Johannesen, a 53-year-old mother of three and co-founder of Dash Adventures, succumbed to injuries at approximately 24,000ft. Her partner, David Ashley, who was climbing with her and two Nepali guides, confirmed the heartbreaking news on social media, stating that she passed away in his arms due to injuries sustained in the avalanche. Ashley expressed his profound grief, describing the loss as “utterly soul crushing.”

In a subsequent update shared last night, Ashley revealed seeking professional help to cope with the overwhelming sorrow. He acknowledged the difficulty of processing the loss and thanked well-wishers for their support. Despite the despair, he expressed gradual signs of recovery, emphasizing the gradual return to a sense of normalcy. Johannesen had been documenting her expedition online before the tragic incident, with her final public post reflecting her anticipation and readiness for the challenging climb ahead at Makalu Base Camp.

Known for its technical difficulty and harsh weather conditions, Makalu stands at 27,838ft, posing significant challenges to climbers. According to expedition officials in Nepal, Johannesen had recently reached the summit before the avalanche struck near the mountain’s third camp. Despite receiving medical attention on the mountain, she sadly passed away before her body was transported to Kathmandu. Ashley is currently making arrangements for cremation services in Nepal, as per Johannesen’s wishes, with plans for a memorial service in the United States alongside her family.

The tragedy occurred shortly after Ashley initiated a fundraising campaign related to the Makalu expedition, aiming to become the first living kidney donor to attempt the climb. In a fundraiser post from February, he shared his journey as a kidney donor and mountaineer, emphasizing the broader message of inspiring others and dispelling misconceptions about living kidney donors’ capabilities. Ashley’s expedition symbolized a commitment to pushing boundaries and raising awareness about organ donation beyond the heights of Everest.
