The ongoing discussion around Nigel Farage’s acceptance of a £5 million gift from a cryptocurrency billionaire is engaging Mirror readers, with opinions divided on whether Farage should resign over the matter.

Pressure is mounting on the Reform leader as he faces an inquiry for allegedly failing to disclose the money received from Christopher Harborne in early 2024, just before announcing his candidacy for Parliament. Farage maintains his innocence, stating that the funds were necessary for his personal security.

Recently, it was revealed that the Parliamentary Standards Commissioner, Daniel Greenberg, will conduct an investigation into the matter following the gift received by Farage prior to the general election. The Reform party asserts that the money was an unrestricted personal gift, hence not subject to declaration requirements. Additionally, the Electoral Commission is contemplating launching its own inquiry with a potential announcement coming soon.

Should Farage be found in violation of regulations, consequences could range from a public apology to suspension or even expulsion from the Commons. The Commissioner’s inquiry has stirred reactions from various political figures, including Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy and Labour Party chair Anna Turley, who advocate for a thorough investigation into the matter.

Christopher Harborne, known as Chakrit Sakunkrit in Thailand, has been a significant donor to the Reform party, contributing over £22 million in the past seven years and supporting Farage’s travel expenses to events like Donald Trump’s inauguration. Furthermore, Harborne donated £25,000 to Farage for a humanitarian mission to the Maldives, as per Electoral Commission records.
