An individual suspected of aiding a Turkish Cypriot man in the abduction of his young son in Cyprus has been taken into custody. According to local authorities, the 29-year-old father forcibly took the two-year-old child from his British mother’s residence in the popular vacation area of Limassol, in collaboration with another individual, and then fled the scene in a white car.
Law enforcement officials have apprehended a 53-year-old Turkish Cypriot man linked to the kidnapping case, suggesting he worked together with the child’s father, who is currently wanted by the police. Limassol’s Deputy police chief, Lefteris Kyriakou, reported that the getaway vehicle, later inspected by authorities, was found within the British Bases.
The child’s father was already facing an arrest warrant for domestic violence, with investigators suspecting he entered Cyprus illegally from the northern Turkish-occupied regions of the island. The matter was brought to the attention of the Bicommunal Technical Committee on Crime, responsible for addressing shared criminal activities involving the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities, as mentioned by Kyriakou.
The mother, part of the ‘Hope’ program designed to aid victims of domestic abuse, did not activate the program’s emergency alert on her mobile phone during the alleged abduction, possibly due to shock. Reports from Cypriot news outlet SigmaLive suggest that the suspect used a rented vehicle, accompanied by the 53-year-old individual, during the incident at the mother’s residence.
Allegedly, the suspect assaulted the woman and tried to push her into the swimming pool before taking the 23-month-old child and fleeing the scene.
