A tragic bus accident in Australia has claimed the life of a 26-year-old tourist, Serena Andreatta, who was fulfilling her dream. The incident occurred when a FlixBus coach carrying 30 passengers veered off Bruce Highway near Gumlu, Queensland, while en route from Cairns to Airlie Beach. Despite efforts by medical personnel, Serena succumbed to her injuries at the hospital, while 19 other passengers, including foreign nationals and British backpackers, sustained injuries and were promptly taken to medical facilities in Bowen, Ayr, and Townsville.
Serena, originally from Argentina but residing in Italy, had recently arrived in Australia after traveling through Southeast Asia. She had a passion for travel, having explored various countries such as Vietnam, Thailand, Europe, the US, and India, documenting her adventures on social media. Alongside her friend Valentina Accardi, who was seriously injured and hospitalized in Townsville, Serena was looking forward to experiencing new cultures and landscapes.
The bus driver, a 70-year-old from Mackay, suffered minor injuries in the crash, with initial reports indicating no alcohol or drug involvement. However, Queensland Police are yet to confirm these details. State premier David Crisafulli and Transport Minister Brent Mickelberg raised concerns about the safety of Bruce Highway, emphasizing the need for improvements due to previous accidents, including a fatal incident involving a Greyhound bus in 2024.
FlixBus expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy and is cooperating with authorities and families affected by the accident. The forensic crash unit is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash, as the community mourns the loss of a young traveler whose life was cut short during what should have been a memorable journey.
