Alison Hammond expressed her deep sorrow today upon witnessing the aftermath of Hurricane Melissa in Jamaica, which resulted in numerous individuals being left homeless. The 51-year-old presenter from This Morning shared her distress at the sight of the remnants of people’s lives scattered across the streets, including cars, furniture, and clothing, in the wake of the 185mph hurricane that devastated large parts of the Caribbean island. Alison, originally from Birmingham with Jamaican heritage, visited the island approximately seven months after the destructive tropical cyclone wreaked havoc and claimed the lives of at least 45 individuals.

During her visit to the port city of Black River, one of the severely impacted areas, Alison observed residents searching for food and desperately seeking their loved ones in the aftermath of the storm. Witnessing the extensive damage firsthand during her trip with Unicef ahead of Soccer Aid, Alison saw the sorrow and challenges faced by the local community.

At Black River Primary School, significant portions of the structure were rendered unusable, preventing some children from resuming in-person classes. The students recounted their fears as their homes were damaged or destroyed, highlighting the ongoing uncertainties their families continue to endure months after the disaster.

Alison also witnessed widespread devastation in the town, where homes, churches, and the historic market lay in ruins. Reflecting on her experience, she described the overwhelming devastation she encountered, emphasizing the urgent need for support in the recovery efforts.

In an effort to raise awareness and crucial funds for Soccer Aid for Unicef on May 31, Alison documented her visit in a video diary, showcasing her interactions with individuals like 11-year-old Orecia. Orecia, a student at Darliston Primary School in Westmoreland, shared her story of how the hurricane upended her life, leading to severe damage at her school and displacement from her family home.

Despite the challenges faced, Alison witnessed Orecia’s resilience firsthand as the young girl, alongside her classmates, strived to rebuild their lives and return to a sense of normalcy with the support of Unicef initiatives. Through her encounters, Alison was deeply moved by the strength and determination displayed by the affected families during their darkest times.

The impact of Hurricane Melissa in October 2025 left a trail of destruction across Jamaica, affecting an estimated 280,000 children in need of humanitarian aid. Unicef’s efforts have focused on providing temporary learning spaces, school supplies, and psychosocial support to facilitate the children’s recovery and reintegration into education.

Alison emphasized the importance of safe spaces like the Unicef-supported Child Friendly Space in helping children cope with the emotional toll of natural disasters. The upcoming broadcast of a Unicef film featuring Alison’s trip during Soccer Aid for Unicef will shed light on the resilience of children and families in the face of adversity.

Furthermore, the Children’s Investment Fund Foundation (CIFF) has pledged to match donations received up to £6 million for the Soccer Aid for Unicef campaign, with the funds directed towards critical child nutrition programs. The initiative aims to address nutritional challenges and support children affected by crises, ensuring they have the necessary resources for a healthy and fulfilling childhood.

As the event approaches, donations can be made in advance of the match at socceraid.org.uk/donate to support the ongoing relief efforts in Jamaica and other regions affected by similar disasters.
