A woman known for stealing from Tesco stores has been prohibited from entering any Tesco within a 60-mile radius after causing distress to staff and local businesses. Amy McCarthy, aged 32 and residing on Whetstone Lane in Tranmere, received a two-year Criminal Behaviour Order for confessing to two thefts at a Tesco branch in Claughton.
According to the Liverpool Magistrates’ Court, McCarthy frequented a Tesco on Upton Road in Birkenhead multiple times in a day. She shamelessly filled her bag with cheese and fresh poultry without paying and returned later to steal more items. McCarthy, who has a history of offenses related to tampering with vehicles, was sentenced on April 30 and given strict restrictions to deter future crimes.
As per the order, McCarthy is forbidden from entering Birkenhead Town Centre, all Wirral Tesco stores, and the Vue Cinema in Birkenhead. Additionally, she is not allowed within a designated exclusion zone covering key streets and shopping areas. The conditions also dictate that she cannot touch or enter any motor vehicle without consent and must leave any establishment promptly if asked by the staff.
Neighborhood Inspector Nicola Hughes emphasized the impact of theft on the community, stating that it burdens consumers with increased costs. She highlighted that the Order sends a clear message that such behavior is unacceptable, preventing McCarthy from causing further harm to businesses in the area.
Authorities cautioned that any violation of the order could result in arrest and imprisonment, underscoring the importance of Criminal Behaviour Orders in combatting persistent retail crimes. McCarthy is now restricted from entering numerous stores in the area, effectively isolating her from significant parts of the local retail network.
Police encouraged the public to report antisocial behavior, offering multiple reporting avenues including calling 101, using online services, or providing information anonymously through Crimestoppers, with emergencies requiring immediate contact via 999.
