Amanda Knox’s inclusion in the Edinburgh Festival Fringe lineup for a stand-up performance has sparked controversy and outrage due to the sensitive nature of her past involvement in the murder investigation of British student Meredith Kercher. Knox, now 38 years old, is set to present her show ‘Cartwheel’ in August, which is expected to touch upon the high-profile case that rocked the world in 2007.

Meredith Kercher, a 21-year-old from Croydon, South London, was tragically found dead in the apartment she shared with Knox in Perugia, Italy. Knox and her then-boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito, faced accusations and were initially convicted of the crime before being acquitted in 2015 by Italy’s highest court. Another individual, Rudy Guede, served time in prison for his involvement in the killing.

The announcement of Knox’s foray into comedy and the potential references to the case in her show have elicited strong criticism, particularly from those connected to Kercher’s family, who have labeled the move as disrespectful and hurtful to Meredith’s memory. Francesco Maresca, the family’s lawyer, expressed disappointment at Knox’s apparent lack of understanding regarding the emotional impact her actions have on the victim’s loved ones.

The title of Knox’s show is believed to allude to the cartwheels she performed while under investigation, a detail that garnered significant attention at the time and has resurfaced as a point of contention. The Edinburgh Festival Fringe, known for its diverse and boundary-pushing acts, serves as a renowned platform for artists worldwide.

Knox, now residing in the United States with her family, started exploring comedy last year and previously shared the stage with comedian Nikki Glaser in front of a large audience. Despite not receiving payment for her Fringe appearance, the backlash against Knox’s decision to incorporate a notorious case into her comedic material continues to grow, raising ethical concerns about the boundaries of humor.

Organizers at Gilded Balloon, the venue for Knox’s show, have not yet publicly addressed the controversy surrounding her performance. This development follows Knox’s recent activities in London, where her participation in screenings of a documentary about the murder trial stirred further unease among the Kercher family and supporters. Additionally, Knox’s correspondence with a prisoner convicted of a separate crime has drawn attention, indicating her ongoing involvement in various projects beyond her comedy pursuits.
