A frightened teenager recounted the harrowing experience when a massive wildfire approached dangerously close to her family’s residence.

Elvie Drinkwater, aged 16, was instructed to evacuate her home in Capelulo, Conwy, as authorities declared a major incident due to a rapidly spreading wildfire on Conwy Mountain in Wales. Elvie vividly recalled the tense moments before their evacuation, noting how she could sense the wildfire’s presence through sounds and odors without actually seeing the flames.

Describing the experience, Elvie expressed, “You could hear it, you could smell it, but you couldn’t see it. It sounded like cracking, like popcorn in the microwave… crunching.”

Upon receiving a warning from the police on Sunday morning, Elvie’s family hastily gathered essential items in preparation for potential impact from the grass fire. They left hurriedly, uncertain of when or if they could return home.

Despite initially believing the fire was distant from their property, the GCSE student admitted feeling unprepared for the urgency of the evacuation and regretted not being more ready to depart promptly. She reflected, “Knowing that there’s like so many things I want to bring with me, and I just can’t go back. Then there’s that fear, not knowing if I’m coming back. Is my house still going to be there? How long am I going to be away for?”

After a period of anxiety, the family received news that their home had been spared from the fire. However, it took two days before Elvie, her mother, and her partner were permitted to return. Their dog, Marley, had to stay elsewhere as the hotel they were accommodated in did not allow pets during the evacuation.

Despite the distressing events, Elvie expressed confidence in the firefighters’ abilities to manage the situation, stating, “The firefighters did have a good handle on the situation.”

Returning home to charred landscapes was a heart-wrenching sight for Elvie. She lamented the loss of natural beauty in the area, mentioning, “It was really sad driving down the pass and seeing all the devastation. We moved here in 2021, and we did choose this house because of all the natural beauty, everything surrounding us, and now it’s all gone. Heather takes about 10 years to come back, so it’ll be a long time, but it will come back.”

Although the major incident in Conwy has been resolved, firefighters continued to battle multiple active blazes into Tuesday evening.
