Professional swimmer Neil Gilson, known as ‘The Legend of the Lakes,’ draws motivation from his 10-year-old son, Jack, while attempting a record-breaking challenge to swim the 10 largest lakes in Switzerland. Gilson recently set a new world record by completing a 61km swim of Lake Maggiore in 17 hours and 14 minutes. He credits his son for pushing him forward, stating that picturing Jack waiting for him at the shore keeps him going.

Gilson, a father of three and owner of Sandy Cove hotel in North Devon, recalls the challenging time when Jack, at 18 months old, exhibited severe anxiety and troubling behaviors. Initially misdiagnosed with autism and Tourettes, it wasn’t until Jack was three that the family discovered he had PANDAS, triggered by streptococcus bacteria. Treatment, including antibiotics and tonsil removal, significantly improved Jack’s condition.

Inspired by Jack’s journey, Gilson embarked on a mission to raise awareness and funds for PANS PANDAS UK, a charity supporting families affected by similar conditions. Through a series of challenging swims, including his current attempt at the 10 largest Swiss lakes, Gilson aims to highlight the importance of early diagnosis and proper treatment.

With a strict non-stop swimming regimen, Gilson adheres to safety measures and emphasizes the unpredictable nature of open water. His dedication to the cause and personal connection to Jack’s story drive him to raise awareness and support other families facing similar challenges. In his upcoming swim at Lake Geneva, Gilson plans to have Jack join him for the final leg, symbolizing their remarkable journey together.

Gilson’s commitment to his cause aligns with the Mirror’s Save Lives For Sam campaign, emphasizing the importance of safety and preparedness in open water activities. By sharing his experiences and advocating for responsible swimming practices, Gilson seeks to make a positive impact and inspire others to prioritize safety above all else.
