A recent survey revealed that approximately 10% of households are not planning to adhere to the hosepipe bans imposed in their regions following the announcement of droughts affecting significant parts of the country. The UK has experienced four heatwaves this year, with temperatures reaching as high as 35C. Some areas in the UK received minimal rainfall in July, leading to the enforcement of hosepipe bans across the nation. Despite these restrictions, around 11% of households within the ban areas are not inclined to comply.
According to a YouGov poll involving over 4,200 adults, about 5% of individuals are undecided about following the ban. Additionally, the survey highlighted that 10% of homeowners would report a neighbor using a hosepipe during the ban period, while 71% indicated they would not, with the rest uncertain.
Seven water companies have implemented “Temporary Use Bans,” affecting approximately 23 million customers, which translates to about 40% of England’s population. The companies enforcing these restrictions include Affinity Water, Anglian Water, Cambridge Water, Southern Water, South East Water, Thames Water, and South West Water.
The survey depicted a divided public opinion on the hosepipe bans, with 49% of households supporting the restrictions in their localities while 35% opposed them. Some individuals argued that those on a meter should be allowed to use water freely since they pay for it.
Reasons cited by respondents for disregarding the ban included concerns about wastage of fruits and vegetables due to difficulty in watering with a can and a desire to aid garden wildlife. Some participants expressed frustration with water companies and high bills, criticizing the allocation of funds to CEOs rather than infrastructure development.
Households in ban areas can use watering cans or hosepipes for watering food crops when necessary, with drip irrigation systems permitted if equipped with a timer and pressure-reducing valve to deliver water directly to the soil.
As nearly one-third of England faces prolonged dry conditions, with some regions experiencing normal weather patterns, a spokesperson from Water UK emphasized the importance of conserving water and praised customers for their efforts to safeguard the environment.
An Environment Agency representative highlighted the excessive water consumption associated with hosepipes and the necessity for short-term bans to conserve water resources amid uncertain drought conditions.
