A recent scientific review suggests that vitamin D supplements do not offer significant protection against falls and fractures in older individuals. The NHS advises people in the UK to take vitamin D during autumn and winter to support bone health due to limited sun exposure.

The review analyzed 69 clinical trials involving 153,902 participants and found minimal impact on fracture risk from vitamin D or calcium supplementation. Researchers concluded that routine use of vitamin D supplements is not effective in preventing falls and fractures.

Experts have raised concerns about the efficacy of vitamin pills compared to obtaining nutrients from food. Dosage levels of supplements can also affect their effectiveness, with both insufficient and excessive amounts posing risks.

The study noted that a substantial percentage of older adults experience falls annually, leading to fractures and hospitalizations. While vitamin D plays a crucial role in maintaining bone health, the review indicated limited benefits of vitamin D, calcium, or combined supplementation in preventing specific fractures or falls.

It is essential to acknowledge that these findings may not apply to individuals with specific bone conditions or osteoporosis. Instead, experts recommend activities like resistance training to enhance muscle and bone strength, along with home hazard assessments to reduce fall risks.

Researcher Olivier Massé emphasized the need to shift focus from supplementation to proven interventions for preventing fractures and falls. The study cautioned that individuals taking vitamin supplements might generally lead healthier lifestyles, potentially skewing previous observational studies suggesting benefits in fall and fracture prevention.

While sunlight exposure aids in vitamin D production, dietary sources such as certain foods can also contribute to vitamin intake. The NHS advises obtaining calcium through a balanced diet, particularly from dairy, leafy greens, and fortified foods, with a daily recommended intake of 700mg for adults.

For those requiring supplementation, healthcare providers often prescribe combined Calcium and Vitamin D tablets to support bone health and prevent osteoporosis.
