A recent study suggests that flight attendants and pilots face a higher risk of radiation-related cancer mortality compared to individuals working with radioactive materials. The study, published in JAMA Internal Medicine, analyzed over 12 million death certificates to examine cancer death rates linked to radiation exposure. Flight crew members, due to their occupational exposure to cosmic ionizing radiation at high altitudes, were found to have elevated risks for various radiation-related cancers, including leukemia, lymphoma, multiple myeloma, and others.
The study revealed that flight attendants had the highest percentage of deaths from radiation-related cancers among more than 500 different occupations, with pilots ranking second. Interestingly, neither group exhibited elevated death rates from cancers not associated with radiation exposure, indicating that the excess mortality observed was likely due to occupational radiation exposure rather than lifestyle or socioeconomic factors.
Despite some study limitations, such as the inability to quantify specific radiation exposures for each individual and potential misclassification of occupations on death certificates, the findings emphasize the increased risk faced by flight crews. Factors like cosmic radiation, UV-A light exposure, and circadian disruption pose significant challenges in understanding the exact contributions to cancer risks in these professions.
Addressing the low awareness of these risks, the study authors highlighted the importance of monitoring and managing radiation exposure for aircrews. Recommendations include implementing skin examinations for high-altitude workers, considering earlier or more frequent mammograms for female crew members, and maintaining a vigilant approach to cancer detection among pilots and flight attendants. The study underscores the need for heightened awareness and proactive measures to mitigate the potential health impacts of radiation exposure in the aviation industry.
