The victim of the recent stabbing incident in Belfast has emerged from a medically induced coma, but his family has expressed concerns over the potential loss of vision in his right eye.

Stephen Ogilvie sustained severe injuries, including the loss of his left eye and deep lacerations to his head, face, and back during the attack at Kinnaird Avenue in north Belfast last week, which some have described as an ‘attempted beheading’.

Hadi Alodid, 30, has been charged with attempted murder in connection with the stabbing and appeared before the Belfast Magistrates’ Court.

His next court appearance, via videolink, is scheduled for July 8.

Mr. Ogilvie’s family confirmed on Wednesday that he had regained consciousness from the induced coma and expressed gratitude for the support and generosity received following the assault.

While relieved that he is no longer in a coma, they acknowledged that he still faces significant challenges ahead, including the risk of losing sight in his right eye.

The family released a statement expressing their deep appreciation for the widespread kindness shown to them, especially from individuals unfamiliar with their situation.

Alodid, a Sudanese national, entered Northern Ireland through the Irish border by bus in February 2023 after flying to Dublin from Paris. He sought asylum upon arrival and was granted permission to stay in the UK until 2028.

Following the circulation of a graphic video of the stabbing, prominent figures such as Elon Musk and Tommy Robinson called for public demonstrations. Subsequently, anti-immigration unrest erupted, resulting in property damage, including fires and attacks targeting individuals based on race.

Law enforcement has made 35 arrests related to the disorder, with 23 individuals facing charges so far.
